FOR PURCHASE Matted ensemble as shown. $950 ![]()
Consisting of a pencil drawing of a Ju-88 attacking a merchant ship of Murmansk-bound PQ-17 north of Norway. It has already dropped its bombs on a tanker, and heading back to base in Norway, shoots its guns at a freighter. Also Luftwaffe wings (metal) and Hajo Herrmann’s cap badge (replica) and FIVE original signatures:
General Hajo Herrmann was one of the most innovative air tacticians in the WWII Luftwaffe and a confidant of Hitler and Goering. At one time during the war he was based in Norway, flying Ju-88′s against Allied arctic convoys taking supplies to Russia. He also attacked the famous convoy PQ-17, which was largely decimated by German aircraft and U-boats. One of his awards was the Knight’s Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords. Herrmann passed away a few months ago.
Lt. Commander Frank Saies-Jones served in the Royal Navy on destroyers. He later volunteered for and served in submarines, including HMS Sportsman. He was highly decorated.
Commander C.N. Mawer, DSC. served in the Royal Navy on destroyers, escorting Russia-bound convoys. He was close to a convoy when the Scharnhorst was sunk. His crew sank two German destroyers.
Able Seaman Gunner Jim Colman served on a Canadian Tribal Class destroyer, HMCS Huron. His ship escorted convoys to Murmansk in Russia.
Able Seaman Gunner Don Newman served in the Royal Canadian Navy on Tribal Class destroyers, including HMCS Athabaskan. He was involved in the escorting of Russia-bound convoys and like the rest of his crew, survived the hardships of those trips. He survived the sinking of his destroyer, despite 128 men killed when HMCS Athabaskan was torpedoed.
A bio card and photos of these men comes with the pencil ensemble. It describes their wartime experiences in more detail.
