Erich Hartmann (‘Bubi’) was called the ‘Black Devil’ by the Russians. In 1,404 combat missions he engaged in 825 actual aerial conflicts. He crash landed 14 times. He served with JG-52 and at the wars’ end was captured by the Russians and imprisoned for ten years. His highest award was the Knight’s Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds.
