Hajo Herrmann passed away in late 2010 in Germany. He was 96 years of age.

Herrmann was one of the Luftwaffe’s most innovative air tacticians of World War II. His career began with the Spanish Civil War, flying the He-111. He was also in the Polish campaign of 1939 and was later based in Norway, attacking Allied convoys in the Ju-88. He also flew in Italy and Sicily. On one occasion he dropped a single bomb on the SS Clan Fraser, the resulting explosion sinking eleven ships. He was a confidant of Reichmarshall Hermann Goring and flew 320 missions as a bomber pilot. In 1942 he was appointed to the operational staff and created the Night Fighter Wing. At war’s end he was captured by the Russians and spent 10 years in a camp before returning to Germany in 1955.
