Consisting of a pencil drawing of Steinhoff’s Me-262 crashing on takeoff with a blown tire, which caused his facial injuries, his Knight’s Cross with Oak Leaves (replica), a photo of Steinhoff WITH HIS ORIGINAL SIGNATURE ON THE PHOTO and a pencil portrait of Steinhoff before the accident.
Johannes Steinhoff was a recipient of the Knight’s Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords. He survived WWII after serving the entire war as a fighter pilot, scoring 176 victories! While flying the Me-262 jet with JV 44 on April 18, 1945, one of his tires blew out on takeoff, resulting in a tragic crash which left him badly burned. His eyelids were reconstructed by a British surgeon after the war. He had flown a total of 993 combat missions.
