F/O Ralph Downing, RAF. Born in Vernon, British Columbia. Posted to England. By 1943 he was with RAF 184 Squadron stationed near Bath, on Hurricanes. By 1944 the squadron had converted to Hawker Typhoons. 400 m.p.h. and especially effective against Tiger Tanks. Downing saw heavy action in Europe against German heavy armor and truck convoys.

F/O Angus McIntyre Scott joined the RCAF in 1942. He took training in England and converted to Typhoons in February 1945. He was with 440 Squadron at Eindhoven, Holland. He flew 30 operational sorties. He flew from numerous bases until the end of the war, shooting up all manner of ground targets, including German heavy armor.

F/Lt. Robert E. Spooner joined the RCAF in 1941. By 1944 he was at Melsbroek, flying Hawker Typhoons. A few weeks later he was at Eindhoven, Holland. He was a Flight Commander by November of that year. Spooner flew support for the Nijmegan attack and in the Ardennes for ‘Battle of the Bulge.’  Other high adventures included train strafing and an exciting mid-air collision in cloud, although both aircraft returned safely to base. Spooner completed 97 sorties and holds the DFC.

All of these pilots were particularly lucky to survive, as ground attack was highly dangerous.
